Local Flavor: St. Andrews Salt Works Raid Reenactment
by Bonnie Tate
I can’t resist a living history reenactment…
Here are are a few shots from a weekend Civil War reenactment on the beaches of nearby St. Andrews Bay. This was the site of a Confederate saltworks, where water from the bay was boiled down for salt (vital for preserving food and curing leather.) Union soldiers came ashore for the raid and the Confederates defended the big iron salt pots from their position in the palms.
